Hammudi Al-Rahmoun Font recalls his first experience facing a cast of actors, the feeling of power in front of the interpreter’s fragility, and the subsequent sadomasochist relationship that can be established between both, as a key factor to conceiving Othello. The legacy of Orson Welles, who already pursued this Shakespeare’s to experiment with hybrids forms (Filming Othello), is revived by Al-Rahmoun in a self-reflective essay about porosities linking the reality and the fiction: in this case it’s an unscrupulous director able to manipulate his actors’ real life so the passions, intrigues and jealousy of his Othello astoundingly look true in the screen. However, the aesthetical achievements resulting from this dissolution of borders carry some inevitable, severe consequences.

Hammudi Al-Rahmoun Font

Hammudi Al-Rahmoun Font was born in Barcelona in 1979. Son of a Syrian father and a Catalonian mother, Hammudi spent his childhood between Barcelona and Saudi Arabia. He graduated at the Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC) in 2003, where he teaches at present. After completing a practical training based on small formats (shorts that explore passages between the reality and the fiction), Hammudi Al-Rahmoun has just made his feature film debut with Othello, a film in which he deepens, from the vantage point of black humour, in the often sinister relationships between life and art.

“When I studied in film school, I remember in the beginning of the third year, we created a macro-casting. The objective was to obtain a large database of available actors for shooting student’s Films, inexperienced marathoners and arrogants students. We set four classrooms and tested around a hundred actors. There were people of all ages and especially
non-professional actors who saw us as an opportunity to test their interpretive restlessness. I’d never done a casting session before. Of all people I interviewed, I remember especially a man who must have been around 50 years. I don’t remember his name or his face neither 10 years later, but I still remember how his voice trembled while told us his name.
My heart sank. I was 20 and that man was my father’s age. I took hold of their vulnerability and spent the interview trying to reassure him. That day I realized the power I had as director. How vulnerable could feel an actor. The responsibility that I had with people who are going to put in my hands.
The director-actor relationship may have sadistic-masochistic
component. I want to find the truth as director and sometimes actor asks me that if I could help him to connect, to feel things that without induction would be difficult to experiment.
It’s a dangerous and delicate relationship and I always think that the director has responsibility when an actor comes to him and where are the ethical limits on this behavior”.
